Tree Maintenance Work 2024

Conservancy contractors are currently working on trees downstream of Baits Bite Lock. Much of this is being carried out without the need to operate from the towpath. As work continues some towpath closures may be required as we progress to the section opposite Dock Lane.

What you might see:

You will see our contractors, on our behalf, out maintaining trees downstream of  Baits Bite Lock this autumn.

What they are doing and why:

They will be removing a very small amount of trees that need managing to prevent the risk of a tree or large branches falling across the towpath or the river. The vast majority of their activity will involve pollarding trees, the branches of which will be laid behind, and off the towpath area. Pollarded trees sprout new, vigorous growth relatively quickly. This soon improves the aesthetic appearance of the managed trees.

How are we supporting wildlife and the

environment

Whilst our priority is to protect people, we also wish to protect the environment. Our work only occurs at suitable times during the year to avoid any disruption to nesting birds.

The pollarded branches are laid horizontally in stacks, where possible, in a technique called ‘dead hedging.’ This encourages the life cycle of hundreds of invertebrates which in turn supports other wildlife and the wider eco system.
